Rebellin: Contadors Giro dItalia pain could last half a weekMay 16, 2015 (18:45) [ Indexed from Cyclingnews.com ] What is it like racing a bike when your shoulder has been recently dislocated like Giro dItalia leader Alberto Contador? CCC-Sprandi Polkowice rider Davide Rebellin was unlucky enough to experience the same injury in the Tour of Turkeys last stage, when the Italian veteran crashed when a dog ran out into the road. Twenty-eight kilometres from the line on the last stage, Rebellins teammate Stefan Schumacher initially collided with the dog. Rebellin was unable to avoid crashing into the German and fell as well. The Italian couldnt continue the race - when he was on the point of taking a podium finish. Dislocated shoulders are relatively rare in cycling. Contador initially thought he had broken his collarbone, which is much more frequent. But Rebellin points out dislocated shoulders are an injury that vary in form and in recovery procedure. I had to go to hospital and had a checkup there, unlike Contador, who received medical attention at his hotel. It hurts a heck of a lot at first but the worst of the pain did subside a lot after three or four days. So in Contadors case, it could take half a week for the pain to go, Rebellin told Cyclingnews.ADVERTISEMENT Not taking part in the Giro dItalia, Rebellin emphasises that although the injury was the same in name, there are some big differences between his and Contadors situations. You have to bear in mind, too, that I was able to rest completely for that period, the crash was on the last day of racing. In Albertos case, he has to race on. Rebellin, like Contador, used icepacks to try and ease the pain. I was back on the bike after three or four days. In my case it still hurt the most when you stand on the pedals for a sprint, say, or on a climb. A former Giro dItalia leader, Rebellin finished fourth on todays final climb of Campitello Matese back in 1994, leading in the group of overall contenders after Evgeni Berzin won the stage ahead of Oscar Pellicioli and then the Giro dItalia two weeks later.

Quotes from the startline of Amstel Gold RaceApril 20, 2015 (05:15) [ Indexed from Cyclingnews.com ] The hilly classics began in earnest as the riders lined up in Maastricht for the start of the Amstel Gold Race. Seven former champions were present, including three-time and defending champion Philippe Gilbert. Other previous winners on show were Roman Kreuziger (2013), Enrico Gasparotto (2012), Damiano Cunego (2008), Stefan Schumacher (2007), Frank Schleck (2006) and Davide Rebellin (2004). Gilbert is the hot favourite as he looks to add yet another victory to his to Cauberg scrapbook and he will have the backing of a strong BMC team. Going up against him will be the likes of world champion Michal Kwiatkowski (Etixx-QuickStep), Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), Joaquim Rodrguez (Katusha) and Daniel Martin (Cannondale-Garmin) if he wants to take victory. On a sunny, but chilly morning in Maastricht, Cyclingnews caught up with many of the big contenders and a few who are hoping to cause an upset.ADVERTISEMENT Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) All of these three are good for me and just winning one makes your entire week, Valverde told Cyclingnews on Sunday morning, Ive never won Amstel but Im not fussy about which! My conditions very good, what you need is luck. But bringing in that extra section before the finish after the top of the Cauberg like that isnt so great for me. I prefer the old Amstel finish. Dan Martin (Cannondale-Garmin)
