The Euskaltel-Euskadi team have shown qualified support for Mikel Astarloza after it was confirmed at the end of last week that the 30-year-old Spanish rider has been banned for two years having tested positive for EPO. A statement posted on the Euskadi Foundation’s website suggested that the evidence against 2009 Tour de France stage-winner Astarloza was not convincing. Mikel Astarloza says he will appeal his suspension for testing positive for the blood-boosting hormone EPO while training for the Tour de France last June. Astarloza was suspended by the Spanish federation until June 2011 after testing positive ahead of last year's Tour. He announced his decision to appeal the suspension on his website. More...

Mikel Astarloza has been handed a two-year ban from competition by the Spanish Cycling Federation for the use of Erythropoietin (EPO). The Spaniard, who tested positive for the illegal blood booster in a control conducted 25 days before he won a stage at the 2009 Tour de France, said he will appeal the decision. “I keep reaffirming my innocence and therefore I strongly disagree with the penalty imposed, and will appeal this sanction to the proper authorities,” he said on his website.  ... Details have emerged in the Basque press regarding the defence Euskaltel's Mikel Astarloza is likely to put up against his positive test for EPO in June, which could see him stripped off his Tour de France stage win in July. Basque Mikel Astarloza reiterated he's innocent following counter-analysis confirmation of a positive test for blood booster Erythropoietin (EPO). Astarloza, who won Tour de France stage 16, dismisses any drug use and his Euskaltel-Euskadi team supports him. Team Euskaltel-Euskadi announced on Tuesday that counter-analysis has confirmed Mikel Astarloza's positive test for blood booster Erythropoietin (EPO). "It is not a surprise, since the result was leaked to the media a few days ago," said the Basque team. Astarloza, 29, tested positive for EPO on June 26, but the International Cycling Union (UCI) only announced the result on July 31.
